What are green crackers?
Green crackers are a redesigned type of firework made to reduce the air and noise pollution that typically follows festival celebrations such as Diwali. Rather than being a single new product, “green crackers” refers to formulations and designs approved to emit fewer harmful particles and lower noise levels than conventional fireworks.
These crackers were introduced in India with the stated goal of balancing festive traditions with public health concerns — aiming to keep celebrations alive while cutting down on the worst pollution spikes.
The science behind the sparkle
The technical change is mainly chemical. Traditional fireworks rely on metal salts, sulphur, strong oxidizers, and metal powders to produce colors, sparks, and loud reports. Many of those ingredients generate dense smoke, fine particulate matter, and toxic metal traces that are dangerous when inhaled.
Green crackers approach this problem in three main ways:
- Cleaner colorants and fewer toxic metals. Where older crackers used compounds like barium salts or certain heavy-metal blends, green formulations limit or replace those with less toxic alternatives. That reduces the heavy-metal load in the smoke.
- Modified oxidizers and fuels. The oxidizers and fuels are adjusted to burn more completely or produce fewer secondary gases such as sulphur dioxide. Better combustion chemistry can lead to fewer unburned particles.
- Dust suppressants and binders. Additives such as zeolites or other mineral binders capture or reduce the formation of very fine particles (PM2.5 and smaller) during combustion. These additives don’t eliminate particles but can lower the volume of respirable dust released.
Together, these changes aim to lower the concentrations of particulate matter and some hazardous gases emitted during bursting.

How much cleaner are they?
Laboratory tests and manufacturer figures often report emission reductions in the range of roughly 20–40% for particulate matter and notable drops in some gaseous pollutants. Those numbers are meaningful in controlled settings.
However, real-world results depend on many factors: the quality of the product, whether it’s genuinely certified, the number of crackers used, and the city’s existing air quality and weather. In heavily polluted cities or under conditions that trap air (like winter inversion layers), even a reduced emission can push air quality into unhealthy ranges.
So, while these crackers are better than some traditional alternatives, they are not pollution-free nor a substitute for broader pollution control.
Noise and health: quieter but not harmless
Green crackers also target noise reductions by design choices that lower decibel peaks. That matters for infants, elderly people, pets, and wildlife. Lower noise reduces acute stress and the immediate harm loud explosions cause.
Still, the remaining particulate emissions — especially any ultrafine particles — can reach deep into the lungs and, in vulnerable people, cause or aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Therefore, the public health benefit depends on both how many people use green crackers and how strictly counterfeit products are kept out of the market.
How to tell if a cracker is genuinely “green”
Look for official certification marks and labelling. In India, genuine green crackers are typically marked with the approving body’s logo and should carry verification (for example, a QR code or label linked to certification). Always buy from reputable vendors and avoid unlabeled or suspiciously cheap products that claim to be eco-friendly without proof.
The bigger picture: a partial but useful solution
Green crackers are a practical compromise. They allow people to celebrate while reducing some of the worst emissions associated with traditional fireworks. Yet they are only one tool: to protect public health effectively, better enforcement, authentic certification, public awareness, and alternative celebration options (light shows, lanterns, music events) should also be part of the approach.
In short: green crackers are scientifically designed to be cleaner. Use them only if they are certified, and remember they improve things — but do not completely solve the problem.
